The chromatic confocal sensor uses the spectral analysis of the light to obtain a perfect focus along its measuring range. When the white light of the source integrated in the sensor encounters an obstacle, the rebound is analyzed in a spectrometer. Each component of the light is calibrated and its rebound is perfectly focused at a precise distance. In this way, the measure will be perfectly focused on the entire range of work (and not only in the center, as happends with the rest of technologies), because each color presents perfect focus on its own distance. And all this in the scale of nanometric precision and millimeter range, depending on the model.
A rugosimeter or a high precision, non-contact (optical) distance meter is thus achieved. As it is valid on any surface (opaque or transparent, glossy or matt) and independent of ambient light, it allows the measurement of thicknesses of translucent layers.
