Laser profilometers (profilers) basically consist of a matrix camera and a line laser integrated into a housing and with control software and analysis of the data and images obtained. Its compactness as an artificial vision system allows it to be installed in production lines easily, even in small spaces.
These high-speed 3D cameras are scanning sensors that obtain the value of the height (distance) of the different parts of the object to be measured along the entire laser line projected on the object. It is therefore a scanning system and the image recovered in this way is not only 2D but 3D, which makes it possible to measure heights, widths, distances or angles.
This enables rapid (three)dimensional measurement, not just inspection, inline.
Logically, this is possible with quality hardware with high-end components (matrix sensor, laser, electronic components) but also with powerful and robust firmware and software that allow fast and quality acquisition, precise location of the object, processing of the data and making it available through communication with PLC or with other devices.

Certainly, laser profilers are a suitable tool for recovery of the 3D profile. Their compactness and unified control make them highly valued in industrial applications with well-defined geometries. But if the application is very demanding, for example if precision and resolution demand a very narrow laser line or if the working field (range of focusing distances) must be large, then you most likely need to use a camera and an independent line laser, and here the Osela machine vision lasers are unbeatable.
